How often should you change the oil in your car?
There was a time when engine oil was recommended to be changed every 5,000 kilometres. Gradually, car manufacturers have been extending oil change intervals typically ranging from 10,000 km up to 15,000 km.
So, how often should you change the oil in your vehicle? Has modern engine technology advanced far enough to eliminate the need for regular oil changes?
Let’s get this myth out of the way.
Yes, technologies used in modern vehicle engines have improved and the use of synthetic oils can last longer before requiring change but as you drive, products of mechanical wear fuel dilution and oxidation still exist. This contaminates the oil and reduces it’s ability to lubricate moving parts and it’s ability to hold these contaminates in suspension until the next oil change.
The longer you drive without changing the oil in your vehicle you increase the level of carbon build-up inside the engine, accelerate engine wear and experience poor performance.
